A Long Way Off DVD Review & #Giveaway.

A LONG WAY OFF is a spirited, modern day retelling of the classic biblical Story of the Prodigal Son – a story about father-son relationships and about the mercy and forgiveness of both his heavenly Father and his earthly father.  Jake Abraham (JASON BURKEY/October Baby) works for his father (JOHN DIEHL/Stargate), a successful produce farmer in North Carolina.   Jake doesn’t like agri-business very much and he’s desperate to leave for the excitement and faster life of the big city. To his shock and delight, his father suddenly agrees to give Jake his inheritance so he can strike out on his own. Bidding farewell to his dad, his brother, Seth (DAVE BLAMY/Army Wives), their loyal secretary, Mrs. Grey (EDIE MCCLURG/ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off/Frozen) and their ranch hand, Jose (ROBERT AMAYA/Courageous), Jake heads to the city where he meets a new friend, Summer (ZOE MYERS/ Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) at the local coffee shop. But Jake is all too eager to sow his oats and make his fortune in a series of sharp stock market moves. He soon runs afoul of an opportunistic temptress (JOANNA JOWETT/Destiny Road) and her mysterious boyfriend, Frank (ROBERT DAVI/ License to Kill/Goonies/Diehard), and in the process, loses everything and finds his life on the line.

MY REVIEW-I am always somewhat skeptical over a movie retelling a bible account. Many times free license is taken over what they want to put in the film but this is one movie I was impressed with. We basically see the Prodigal Son told in modern times. A young man who is working for his father but rebellious, upset at his family and an older son who is shown as having a lot of bitterness at the younger son who wants to implement new farming techniques. They really don't get along. And the father plays a wonderful part showing the kindness, compassion and love that we see in scripture.

The film opens with Jose, a farm hand talking to Jake, the younger son. They are planning to meet for lunch and Jose narrates part of this. He tells how things are different now than they used to be and how Jake wasn't always this way. It then takes you back to before Jake gets upset and leaves the farm. I have to tell you that I think I liked the father and his portrayal best. All the actors do a great job but personally the dad was my favorite. It was soo well done about how much his dad loves him but the son doesn't want anything to do with it other than the money his father can give him. So he takes the money and heads for the big city.

My favorite part was the end. It was very emotional and touching. I think it really helped bring things to life that we see in scripture. I would urge those with young children to use caution in viewing this film. Maybe scan it first so you know what is in there. When Jake is in town partying it up it is implied that he is immoral and we see alcohol, etc. I understand why they do it and for teenagers I don't see any problem showing them this film but for younger children it might be above their heads. Otherwise a great film that I was very impressed with. Wonderful portrayal of our heavenly Father who loves us and waits for us. Excellent!
