Winter Plumbing Tips!!

Well, I don't believe our weather. It has snowed off and on during the past few weeks but not enough to build-up much. Of course, the children are not very happy as they were hoping to be able to go sledding for a little bit. We haven't even had enough for them to sled at all!! But, we have had more than enough trouble with our plumbing. We have gone from water having to run overnight to it being warm enough we don't have to worry about the water pipes at all. And believe me, there are definitely times when I felt like we needed Roto-rooter Plumbing & Drain Service! I will get to that in a little bit:) But I also wanted to give you all some tips for the cold weather, just in case it gets cold enough you might have to worry about your pipes freezing.

1.Use Insulation. 
This is my main method of defense against frozen pipes. Insulation really helps to warm your pipes and keep them from the bitter cold weather outside. Whether this means going underneath the house or in the basement, it is well worth it to keep your water running.

2.Leave a Trickle Running.
This is somewhat old fashioned, but I have used it time and again when we had those nights that dipped very low. Running some water overnight will keep it from freezing. You don't want a lot of water, as that will run up your water bill, but you want enough that it won't freeze right there. We have had it happen and it wasn't pretty:) This is mainly something we used in our camper but it works in the house too.

3.Keep the Heat Running.
Having a warm house will automatically help with the pipes. If you take a trip, make sure to leave the heat on where it will kick in before it drops too low in temperature. We like to keep ours at 60. Just enough to keep the pipes good.

My story I mentioned above has nothing to do with winter time, as we were in Florida at the time. But it had to do with plumbing backing up and water all over the front yard. Believe me, it was not fun and we were oh so happy to call a plumber to check it out. Things were fixed by that evening but it was definitely something we could not fix and it had to have the plumbers touch. So, make sure you keep your pipes from freezing and have a great winter you all!!
