My CSN Review Part 1

I posted earlier about an upcoming review with CSN. Well, the products came in last week and I have been trying them out:) I can't wait to show you what they are!! I am going to be doing 2 parts though because I got 2 items. So part 2 will be tomorrow:)
The first item I am going to share with you is my sandals. I am not much of a sandal wearing person. I am more of a paddock boot or sneaker person:) But when I saw these sandals, I knew I had to choose them as one of my products!! These looked really comfortable and they looked stylish as well. I mean, every girl has to be stylish:)

The sandals have a little bit more of a heel than I am accustomed to but not bad at all. It might take me a little bit to get used to them, which is why I have been wearing them off and on the past few days. The first time I put them on, it kind of threw me off:) I also like that when I put them on, it makes me taller than my sister!! She is younger than me, but taller. Go figure:)
I have to say, the sandals are very cute and comfortable. If you are looking for some stylish shoes that you won't be spending a fortune for, please look into buying a pair of these. And head over to CSN when you get the chance and look around. You will be amazed at what you find!!

Interview With Don Brown!!

Well, for our interview today we have Don Brown, author of the well-known JAG Series. It is a really good series! I encourage you to pick up his latest book, The Malacca Conspiracy. It looks like a very interesting read!!

Charity: How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
DB: I never really had much of an ambition to become an author until about 2002. I’d don’t a lot of legal writing before that, but not much fiction since high school. Then day – zap – lightning struck, and we were off to the races!

Charity: Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?

DB: MALACCA CONSPIRACY is a fast-moving geopolitical thriller set in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and the United States. The book opens with a conspiracy in the Malaysian seaport city of Malacca. A rogue Indonesian general conspires with Saudi operatives to attack oil tankers in the Malacca Straights, coordinated with the purchase of crude oil futures. Their goal is to transform Indonesia into the first Islamic superpower, and to control the strategic sea lanes around the Malacca Straights.
The coordinated attacks on shipping drive up the prices of crude oil futures, and the group then uses billions in revenues from futures profits to finance an overthrow of the Indonesian government and cripple the United States by financing strategic nuclear attacks against three U.S. Cities.
JAG Officers Diane Colcernian and Zack Brewer, first introduced in my breakout novel, TREASON, return by popular demand. As the novel opens, Zack and Diane are serving as naval attachés to Indonesia and Singapore. Reunited for one last hurrah, Zack and Diane find themselves in the midst of investigating the conspiracy, and rush against a perilous deadline to stop it before American cities are obliterated.

Charity: When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
DB: Three things. First, as a novelist, I have an implicit contract with my readers to entertain. To do that, my goal is to build tension on every page in a way that will make the reader want to turn the page, and feel satisfied with the ultimate resolution.
Second, I want to educate readers about geo-contemporary issues that are relevant to our world today. For example, in MALACCA CONSPIRACY, I hope that my readers can, in a fun way, learn about a part of the globe that is both exciting and also strategically important to the United States, and the free world, but that is at the same time, largely ignored in our public schools and our universities.
Finally, I want my stories to be saturated with a biblical world view, one in which biblical truth is manifested throughout, subtly, and in which my readers leave inspired to do what is right.

Charity: Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
DB: I have been to France several times, but regrettably I’ve never had an opportunity to spend much time in Normandy. If someone offered to buy a ticket, that’s where I’d go. I’d like to go there and spend time, at Calais, at Point-du-Hoc, at the hallowed American War cemeteries dotting the lush green landscape overlooking the sea.

Charity: If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?

DB: Let me start by saying that I am not at all into celebrity worship or anything like that, and would not bother to get up and cross the living room floor to look out my front window if someone told me that some Hollywood star or starlet was at that moment driving by my front door in their limousine. To me, there is but one true celebrity, and He is the living Yeshua Messiah. Everyone else pales in comparison to the point that it’s not even funny.
Having said that, there are men here on this planet who I admire and if there are two people I could have dinner with, I’d pick the two men whose voices loomed most powerfully over the first and second halves of the Twentieth Century, namely Sir Winston Spencer Churchill and Ronald Wilson Reagan.
Churchill. Recently I was in a restaurant near my office that I frequent with a former law partner. A lady was there, perhaps in her early forties. I’d met the lady before but didn’t know her well, and had forgotten that she was born in the UK. But on this day, she had an elderly lady with her, who looked to be late eightyish, perhaps early ninetyish. As it turned out, the elderly lady was her mother, was from Scotland, and had moved to America only in recent years.
I bent over and spoke to the elderly lady, and told her how much I appreciated the special bond between the British and the American people. She smiled and nodded that she understood, but I immediately discovered that she could not speak fully, as she had apparently been stricken by a stroke or suffered from some condition that impaired her speech.
I told her that I was a student of the war, and that the sacrifices of the British standing alone for more than two years against Nazi aggression in the defense of freedom had not been forgotten. Again she nodded. Then, I whispered softly and I told her that I had not forgotten these words. “We shall fight them on the beaches, we shall fight them on the landing fields, we shall fight them in the streets, we shall never surrender….” And as I was quoting Churchill, the lady began to excitedly nod her head in agreement, and by the time I had quoted to great line that “if the British Empire and its commonwealth shall last a thousand years, men shall say that this was their finest hour,” the lady was in tears.
The moment was moving to me, and to think that a man’s words could still so powerfully move those who remember them, more than sixty years after the fact, and to instantly bond men and women of different generations and different nationalities, is to me mindboggling.
Reagan. I think in the last half of the Twentieth Century, when we consider the amazing fall of the Soviet Union, without a bullet having been fired between the great superpowers, the leadership and words and bravery of three great men come to mind as having created the climate for that downfall. The first is the brave Pole, Lech Walensa, the founder of the Solidarity Union in Gdańsk who risked his life for freedom at a time when Poland was still ruled by communist jack-boots. The second is Pope John Paul, another son of Poland, II, who used his office to forcefully speak out on moral issues and stare down communism around the globe. The third is Ronald Reagan, who bravely stood up to the growing military threat imposed by the Soviets, rebuilt the US military to the point that the Soviets could not keep up, and whose words were a clarion and prophetic call for freedom around the globe. Who can forget the great and powerful words of Reagan envisioning America as “a shining city on a hill,” or, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” ?
So if I could have dinner with two, I’d choose both of these gentlemen and soak up all the wisdom that I possibly could soak.

Charity: What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
DB: I love history, so this for me would be like a kid trying to choose from a thousand pieces of candy strewn out over a huge table. But if there was only one event, I’d love to go back in time and be at the resurrection. Why? No event, has been so significant in human history. And the resurrection followed by the ascension sure turned a group of twelve, rag-tag pusillanimous wimps into an elite corps of rugged, brave and bold preachers of freedom who were willing to be tortured and die based upon what they had seen. Did it not?

Charity: Do you have a favorite hobby?

DB: Two or three ties for my favorite non-writing pastimes. I like fishing for catfish in the Roanoke River, in my hometown of Plymouth, NC with my fourteen year old son, Graham. I also like taking target practice at the pistol range. I also love coaching my son’s basketball team, even if the kids did try and run a pick-and-roll against a 2-3 zone defense!

Charity: Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?
DB: Here are a few items of worthless trivia. In 1978 I played a trumpet solo for the late Princess Grace of Monaco at the Presidential Palace there. I attended President Reagan’s first inauguration in Washington in January of 1980, and I also attended the Wimbledon men’s finals match between Goron Ivanisovich and Patrick Rafter in 2001. While at Wimbledon, I saw President Clinton there, and I waved at him, and he waved back at me. Hah! How’s that for my claim to fame? Also, I can speak a little bit of Russian. Ever heard Russian doused with a Southern accent? One final tidbit. I am a card-carrying member of the NRA! J

Charity: Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
DB: Davis Bunn, a fellow Tar Heel and a brilliant novelist who I greatly admire, once made a speech that I heard, and these words of wisdom have stuck with me. “If you are going to be a writer,” he said, or words to this effect, “you must write every day. You must write for the love of writing, even if what you write is never published.” To paraphrase Davis, without the eloquence that he is capable of and I am not, “write every day because you love it, and let the love of writing drive you to write.”

Charity: Any last thoughts for your readers?
DB: I’ve given this advice often, but I’ll give it again. If you’re serious about writing, and you want to get published, not only is it imperative to write on a consistent basis, but find a good writers conference or two to attend. Find a conference that will have acquisitions editors and agents on staff. I’ve attended and also served on the faculty of the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference in Black Mountain, NC, but there are lots of good ones out there.
Also, writers must be readers. “I don’t have time,” won’t cut it. Read and study the patterns of the works of writers you enjoy. Also I commend the following “how to” books to you.(1) Writing Fiction for Dummies by Randy Ingermanson. And no, you don’t have to be a “dummie” to read this, but you will be smarter as a novelist after you do. (2) Write Great Fiction-Plot & Structure, by James Scott Bell. Jim Bell is one of the guys that I admire the most in this industry, and not only is he a superb novelist, but he is also respected as of the greatest teachers of the craft out there today. This is one of the best “how to” books out there, and if you check out Jim on amazon, you’ll find that he has several books going into detail on various components of the craft. Get them all and read them all. (3) On Writing, by Steven King. I’m not a Steven King fan, only because I’m not into his genre. But this little primer called On Writing is a, short, excellent primer on the craft. Be forewarned, however, you’ll find that the language is a little more salty in places than in Randy and Jim’s books.

And how can they connect with you?
DB: I love hearing from readers and always try and always respond back just as soon as I can. Email me at admin@donbrownbooks.com

Thank you soo much, Don!

Interview With Ginger Garrett Plus Book Giveaway!!

For our second author interview, we have Ginger Garrett with us. She is the author of, Chosen, which I will be giving away. This was a review copy so it has been read but it is in brand new condition. Gently used:) I will be posting my review soon and I have to tell you, this book was great!

How long have you known you wanted to be an author?

I didn’t begin writing until I was about 30. I had experienced a tragedy in my life and was trying to make sense of it all. I started writing short inspirational passages, and copying down scripture verses that comforted me. A few years later, I went to Barnes & Noble and bought some books on how to be a writer. I did everything those books said to do, and about a year later, found an agent and had my first book deal.

Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?
CHOSEN: THE LOST DIARIES OF QUEEN ESTHER, is both fact and fiction. Based on the biblical book of Esther, as told through her personal diaries discovered after the devastating earthquake that hit Iran. The book includes footnotes and news articles that help readers understand why Esther’s story still matters today—and what lessons we can learn from her.

When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
A sense of joy and hope for the future, and a burning passion to live a great life.

Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
I’d like to go to Iran, the center of the ancient Persian empire where Esther ruled as queen. There is a site there dedicated to her, where Iranians still visit and bring flowers and such in her memory. Iran is a country of wild beauty and wild extremes: both dry desert and snow-capped mountains.

If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
Sir Anthony Hopkins (to ask who he liked playing better—C.S. Lewis or Hannibal Lector, and why), plus President Obama. I have a laundry list of questions for him!

What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
I’d love to be at the resurrection. Wouldn’t that be cool? I’d sit in the corner of the tomb, not making a sound, and watch as the body under the grave clothes started moving, then sat up and peeled back the cloths. If I hadn’t fainted yet, maybe I would be able to talk with Jesus, too.

Do you have a favorite hobby?
My dogs. I own an Old English mix and a Great Pyrenees puppy, who weighs 109 pounds and is 6 months old. I just adore them.

Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?
I make up songs for everything. There’s the “Feeding the Dogs” song, the “Waking Up the Kids Song,” and the “Brushing the Teeth” song. I also try to write one poem every night before going to bed. The best ones get transferred to a nice journal for keeping. The worst ones, like “Ode to Carrots I Have Loved,” don’t ever get repeated, except to make my husband laugh.

Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
Read as much as you can. And learn to ignore fear. Ignore your inner critic. The hardest part for any writer, I suspect, is writing despite all the fear and anxiety. The book that has meant the most to me in my life, besides the Bible, is the diary of one of my ancestors which has been passed down through generations of my family. It was never professionally published, but it impacted lives in a very real way. And that’s the goal of any writer, so honor your work even if it never gets “professionally published.” Writing can be an incredible legacy for your family.

Any last thoughts for your readers?
Last year I had ankle surgery and was flat on my back for weeks. I just found out that the ankle surgery failed, and we have to re-do it. The surgeon said to me, “You’re too young to understand this truth yet, but life is about managing setbacks, and then you die.” Nice, wasn’t it? But he did have a point. We’re all going to get hit with disappointments and setbacks, and most of them through no fault of our own. But a good life, a rich life, is not about everything going well. It’s about loving other people, being loved, and saying encouraging, kind words whenever we can.

And how can they connect with you?

Interview With Linda Windsor!!

Today I have an interview with Linda Windsor. No giveaway I am afraid but please still read it:)

Thank you for being with us today, Linda!

How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. That is what my degree is. And I’ve always been a history nut. Then I read Kathleen Woodweiss’ books and my mind started churning out what-ifs until I decided to try and write a historical romance. That was in the late seventies. But with other priorities, like being a single working mom, I stalled until the late eighties. My first book was published in February 1990.

Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?

HEALER is book one of the Brides of Alba trilogy, Alba being an early name for Scotland. And this is Arthurian Scotland—and King Arthur, for that matter—as never seen before. The series focuses on three brothers, their respective brides, and how love and faith grow to enable them to survive those trying times of the Saxon invasion and the church's desperate measures to ensure the survival of Christianity. These measures include matchmaking men and women from the Davidic bloodline passed on by royal Irish and the apostolic bloodlines established in Britain by the first century family and followers of Christ.

The historic Arthur in HEALER, one of at least two arthurs (a title) and definitely the last one, is a product of such matchmaking. So is the merlin (another title) Merlin Emrys, who in this case is a documented Celtic Christian bishop and druidic scientist. In fact most of the Arthurian figures were bred and raised by the Grail Church to become warriors, kings and queens of Britain to ensure the Grail Church's survival. Brenna and Ronan's conflict is a result of that matchmaking gone wrong.

Forced to live most of her twenty years in hiding from both her own clan and the clan who murdered her family, Brenna of Gowys wonders how she can possibly fulfill her mother’s prophecy that the Gowys seed will divide the enemy O’Byrne’s house and bring about a peace beyond his wicked ken. Brenna’s clan remnant would have her lead them to certain death against the stronger O’Byrnes. But Brenna is a healer, not a warrior. Nor is she the shape-changing wolf-woman of the hills as she’s rumored to be by the superstitious clans; although she does have a gift with wild animals, including her pet wolf Faol.
So when Brenna witnesses the ambush and attempted murder of a warrior during the annual O’Byrne hunt to find the wolf-woman, she does what she’s called to do. She brings him into her mountain hideaway to heal him, even if he could be her enemy. All she knows is that he is not just wounded in body, but in spirit; that he’d been there as a frightened child when her family had been slain; and that she has seen a future with him. But is her faith strong enough to follow the vision, no matter where it leads?

When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
Besides the satisfaction of a few hours entertainment, I hope they learned a little something too about the early Christian faith and how it conquered barbarians with love
when Rome’s sword could not; and that the wisdom in the Word that applied in the Dark Ages, applies just as much today.

Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
It used to Ireland, but I had the good fortune to make that dream come true. So now, it’s Scotland/England/Wales.

If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
Okay, I’m stumped. I’m going to bail out of this one and choose my grandchildren.

What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
Historically, here in America on V-Day, the day World War II ended.

Do you have a favorite hobby?

I play guitar, keyboard and sing. My late hubby and I had a professional band for ten great years. So I love sitting around the kitchen table, jamming and singing with fellow musicians.

Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?

I’m an introvert. But I’ve masked it so well for so, no one would ever guess. Becoming published and all those years on stage forced me into the spotlight. I coped using comic relief. God gave me a wacky sense of humor as evidenced in my romantic comedies and that has been my salvation both in and out of bouts with biological/chemical depression.

Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
In addition to reading all kinds of fiction, not just your genre, expect rejection and learn from it. Rejections are a refining process in our careers. Growth pains. Gather any helpful advice from them and let them go. It doesn’t mean you can be bummed. That’s natural. But it’s taking that lemon and turning it to lemonade that will keep you going. I always joke that someday I’ll do a keynote speech on how I failed my way to success. And my rejections were like footprints in the sand. Seeing them told me that at least I was moving toward my goal. No footprints? No progress.

Any last thoughts for your readers?

HEALER has been a challenge for me. Aside from an engaging romantic adventure, I’ve tried to provoke thought and provide insight into how our early church fathers witnessed to pagan cultures (substitute New Age for today), not with judgment, but with love; and how they built on the beliefs the two had in common, exchanging knowledge. This is the approach I used in sharing my research into this era with my daughter who’d left the faith for Wicca (white witchcraft) after being stalked and assaulted in college. Since she came back to God, this has become of passion of mine—reaching out to unbelievers with science and history that eventually lead to Christ.

And how can they connect with you? Please drop by my website at www.LindaWindsor.com for a sneak peak at HEALER and all my other books. Sign up for my contest and my Umpthly Newsletter. (umpthly-a Windsorism meaning, not on a regular basis, only when I have something to say.) Oh, and please check out HEALER’s book trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4jSufmR4us&feature=channel.

Guys, like I said, I hope you read this interview. I think it has some very vital information in it that we need to remember as Christians.

Thank you so much, Linda!!

My Thoughts Of Gorton's Fish and Giveaway!!

I love fish! Let me just start out my review of Gorton's by letting everyone know I like lots of fish. I like it grilled, fried or any other way you can cook it. Notice I said cooked. Not raw:) Cannot do the raw sushi thing!! No way!

Now I was sent 5 coupons to get whatever I wanted from the frozen section. Our Wal-Mart did not have the one I really, really wanted to try so I went with the next one. I wanted to try the Lemon Pepper Grilled Fillets. But all they had in the grilled was the Cajun Blackened Fillets. The one I actually got to try was the Lemon Herb Battered Fillets."Whole, flaky white fillets in a crispy batter are a traditional fish recipe that's sure to please the whole family. Each battered filler variety is ready from the oven in 25 minutes."

These were very good!! I like when food has a nice seasoning without lots of calories. And while I didn't like that these were battered, the seasoning was great! With a little bit of tartar sauce, we were set! I didn't even add much tartar sauce. There was good enough seasoning on the fish.

I also tried the Breaded Butterfly Shrimp. I like shrimp but my mom LOVES shrimp. I would have personally gone with the Crunchy Golden Popcorn Shrimp but my mom likes the Butterfly Shrimp.

"Gorton's Shrimp are made with plump premium shrimp and are prepared in rich delectable sauces, flavorful crunchy breading, light crispy batter, or marinated and grilled."

These were a little different than what we all expected. They were good but just not the shrimp we were looking for I guess. There was absolutely nothing wrong with them. Don't get me wrong!! They were very good. It was just our family:)

Gorton's strives to give you options for healthy choices in your family. The Grilled items are definitely a great choice when you want a healthy meal at dinner time.

Now, Gorton's has offered to give 3 of my blog readers 2 coupons for free products!! That means you can get any of their fish items! These are really good and you will enjoy them.

MANDATORY ENTRY-You MUST go to the Gorton's website. Look around and then come back and tell me what product you would like to try.
You must do this entry or the extra entries do not count.

My Review of She Walks In Beauty by Siri Mitchell

I just recently read She Walks In Beauty by Siri Mitchell. This is the first book I have read by Siri and I was pleasantly surprised.

The synopsis is a young lady who is being forced to pursue a man she doesn't really want to. Her aunt and father have told her that is the only way to be happy. Clara Carter wants to marry for love. But her aunt says no. So she does all her aunt tells her to, while at the same time, her best friend is pursuing the same man.

"For a young society woman seeking a favorable marriage, so much depends on her social season debut. Clara Carter has been given one goal: secure the affections of the city's most eligible bachelor. Debuting means plenty of work--there are corsets to be
fitted, dances to master, manners to perfect. Her training soon pays off, however, as celebrity's spotlight turns Clara into a society-page darling.

Yet Clara soon wonders if this is the life she really wants. Especially when she learns her best friend has also set her sights on Franklin De Vries. When a man appears who seems to love her simply for who she is and gossip backlash turns ugly, Clara realizes it's not just her marriage at stake--the future of her family depends on how she plays the game."

I really liked the plot. It was very interesting and Siri kept my attention through the whole book. One thing I noticed was how much the women and ladies were supposed to just follow whatever they were told. It was like she had no opinion of her own. Or she was not supposed to:) This book did a good job of showing the mind set of that day. It also shows how we shouldn't let things get in between people as friends. She almost lost her friendship with Lizzie over winning this man. I loved the way the book ended!! Beautiful:)

If you are looking for a nice read, pick this novel up at your local bookstore. It is worth your time!
Thanks Jim for the review copy:)

Interview With Leann Harris!! Plus Giveaway!

Hey everyone!! For our second interview we have Leann Harris. She is giving away her two last books to one of my blog readers:) You will be getting two books.

Thank you for being with us today, Leann!
How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
I've always had stories running around in my head. I only started to write after my youngest when to pre-school, then I gave in and wrote a story about a deaf girl in Colorado in 1876. I taught deaf kids and was raised in Denver.

Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?
Second Chance Ranch is about a soldier/cowboy Zachary McClure who lost his leg in Iraq to a roadside bomb. When he gets back home to Albuquerque, his sister takes him to an equine therapy ranch. He doesn't expect to be able to ride again, but his love of horses overcomes his reluctance. Sophie Powell, another Iraq war veteran, runs the ranch. She was an Army medic and knows the value of equine therapy and its healing properties. But behind Sophie's smiles and cheerful attitude lurks a pain that Zach sees and understands. Together, they work to make the ranch a success and heal each other wounded hearts. The book will be out in Jan '11.

When a reader gets done with your books, what do you want them to come away with?
Several things. God's grace can overcome any obstacle. And I want people to know how beneficial equine therapy can be to both veterans and children with physical problems. A horse's gait is the closest to a human's. When you build the muscles sitting on the horse, the muscles have memory and it helps with walking.

Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
I would love to go back to Scotland. I visited there in the mid-80's. There is a beautiful city there, Ayr, by the sea. It's on the northwest coast. I'd love to go back there and spend a summer, writing a book.

If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. Churchill was a visionary, as well as Margaret Thatcher.

What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
I would go to Philadelphia 1776 and be in Constitution Hall when they signed the Declaration of Independence.
How neat would that have been?

Do you have a favorite hobby?
I love to garden. If I'm stuck when writing, I go outside and pull weed. It helps. You can check out pictures of my garden at my website www.leannharris.com

Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?
Several years ago, I had a brain aneurysm. I spent 3 months in intensive care. They didn't think I'd live, but God was gracious and I'm here.

Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
Join a writer's group. There are several--RWA, ACFW, Mystery Writers of America. You need to be around other people who write. You learn from them and can have your questions answered.

Any last thoughts for your readers?
I write because I can't not write. God bless me with stories and I want to share them.

And how can they connect with you? visit either one of my websites, www.leannharris.com--leharris@swbell.net
or barbharrison.com --barb@barbharrison.com

I have to tell you, I am with Leann on her vacation spot. I love Ireland and Scotland!! I have never been there but would love to go there sometime in my life. Kind of something to work towards I guess:D
