Interview With Brian Edwards.

I love to read Christian books. As I am sure everyone knows:) Today we have an author of non-fiction Christian books. He has traveled world-wide and written numerous titles. Below is the interview. There is no giveaway but please don't just pass it by.

Thank you for being with us today, Brian!
Can you tell me a little bit about your ministry?
For 29 years I was pastor of Hook Evangelical Church in Surbiton, Surrey . Since my wife died in 1998 I have a ministry of writing, editing ( edit the Day One Travel Guide series), lecturing at conferences and preaching most Sundays.

When a reader gets done with your books, what do you want them to come away with?
I was once asked whether I enjoyed theology since many of my books deal with this. I replied that I loved theology only in so far as it makes my God bigger in my understanding. I would like all who read my books to put the book down with a greater appreciation of the true God and his magnificent grace.

Can you tell me a little bit about your most recent book?
My most recent book is not yet published. It is called Saul and Sons… and deals with the life of Saul, Jonathan and Mephibosheth. It plays out the dynasty of Israel ’s first king. Saul is a tragic figure, one of the saddest in the Bible; so much going for him at the start and such a miserable downward spiral that ends on the blood soaked battlefield at Gilboa with his sons slain beside him. Jonathan is tragic for a different reason; he is a wonderful example of true friendship and loyalty betrayed by a godless parent. And Mephibosheth is a chip off the old block; just like his dad though with a physical disability to contend with. Much to learn with all of them – and that is why they are in the Bible according to Romans 15:4.

Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
Not really, I’m a boring homing bird and would not bother if I never passed through another airport. My international travel is because that is what God wants me to do, not what I would naturally choose.

If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
I have no wish to dine with any living celebrities! So, the first is obviously the Lord himself and the second is my wife – both are in Glory now and I will dine with both one day!

What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
Since I love history, there are so many. I would like to have been with Moses as Israel crossed the sea on dry land, or with the disciples when Jesus came to them on Galilee, then I could tell the critics ‘ I was there, and it really happened that way!’

Do you have a favorite hobby?
Lots. I love gardening, cruising the inland waterways, hill walking, natural history and especially bird watching and photographing wild flowers – but I have very limited time to enjoy any of them to the full. Still, there will be plenty of time in the new heavens and new earth.

Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?
Yes. Some people think that because I have written twenty books on a variety of subjects (theology, biography, revival, biblical commentary, apologetics), I must be an academic who loves study. Neither is true. Study is hard graft for me, I have an atrocious memory, and I am naturally an outdoors person. Those who know me well know all this. But I really don’t pretend to be anything that I am not.

Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
It’s tough getting into print now because there are so many (too many?) books pouring off the Christian presses each year. To preachers I would say: when your members tell you what a wonderful series on the book of Hezekiah you have just preached, don’t be fooled into thinking you can send your notes off to a publisher. There is a world of difference between a sermon series and a book. Publishers will always prefer an outline of the book plus one or two polished chapters to decide on. It’s no good sending something with the rider: ‘I still have a lot more work to do on this’ – they can see that for themselves but it does not tell them how well you can write. Be aware that writing is very hard work and if you simply want your name on the book shelf, forget it — after the first book the bubble bursts.

Any last thoughts for your readers?
Don’t simply read books. Learn from them and apply them. And above all, read those that will help you to grow in your understanding of the Bible and your God.
